April 2010 Newsletter

The last outing of the school year, at the Sheriffs Youth Camp in Barberville was a roaring success.  Everyone seemed to have a very good time.  From the photos, it would seem that all we did was eat and swim, which isn't all bad.  The cook-your-own-meal-at-the-table at the Sugarmill Restaurant was especially unique.  In addition to the restaurant and swimming, DeLeon Springs State Park had a tour boat, visitors center, historic artifacts and markers, a wood carving fair, and local music to enjoy.

We discussed some options for next school year and came up with a tentative list.  If anyone would like to add suggestions, or is willing to plan an outing, please let us know.

Carrina Cooper will arrange two outings to the Gainesville Rock Gym.  This is an indoor facility with a wide variety of climbing options.  There is bouldering for the younger ones, never more than about three feet from the well padded floor, and climbing walls with a range of difficulties for the more adventurous.  Tentative dates are the last Friday in June and the last Friday in July.  Please let us know if you are interested and which date is best for you.

Suggestions for next school year:

Florida Caverns State Park

Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park

Fort Clinch State Park

Shired Island in the Lower Suwanee National Wildlife Refuge

And finally, a club party combined with a service project.
Some ideas include building a picnic table for a park, or a tree planting project.
Please offer your ideas for projects.

We will be taking our kids to the Suwannee Spirit Kids Music Camp at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, north of Live Oak, this weekend, April 30 - May 2.  The event is free, kids get to learn to play music and put on a concert.  The instruments are provided for those who don't have their own. Primitive camping is also free to camp participants and families.  This is close enough that if you don't want to camp you can still come in for the days.  It is not too late to sign up for this one if you are interested.  There are two more scheduled later in the year.  Call us if you have any questions.  (719-6902)

Thank you for your participation over the last year and we look forward to having more outdoor family fun!
